The use of light as a medical treatment has grown significantly in recent years. There are now a number of devices delivering different types of light for an ever-increasing number of cosmetic treatments.
Ultra-violet light, for example, has been used to treat psoriasis (a skin condition) for a number of years, and many people use light boxes during winter to reduce the symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Simply, the exposure to certain kinds of light makes people feel better.
The use of laser light for medical procedures was developed in the 1960’s when they were first used in operations as cutting tools by some surgeons and for other restorative surgery.
Laser technology has developed in the last few decades to treat patients with a variety of different skin problems including the effects of sun damage, the removal of body hair and more recently the treatment of psoriasis, acne and vascular lesions. Since the early 1990’s lasers have become the high tech equivalent of dermabrasion (a form of exfoliation) or of chemical peels for skin resurfacing (removal of outer layer of skin) resulting in a sometimes dramatic improvement to the complexion.
A laser is a high-energy beam of light that can be directed into certain areas or tissues within the skin. These beams of light are produced in one wavelength or colour at a time, and can vary in terms of their strength and the type of tissue that they can target. The laser light is attracted to a target or chromophores (light absorbing material i.e. melanin). Lasers work by creating a photo-mechanical action. Due to the quick pulsing action of the laser which provides a very high peak of energy the chromophore is ruptured by using a shock wave effect which smashes it. The results are instant but the chromophore is not thermally destroyed, this means that due to the unique ability that our cells have to regenerate, for some applications laser will not always achieve the best results as the cell could grow back.
IPL is broadband visible light energy emitted at controlled filtration levels; this is known as selective absorption. The light is set at different wavelengths to target different chromophores. The light is delivered more slowly therefore allowing heat to build up within the target and creating a thermal action. This photo-thermal action results in the denaturation of proteins or coagulation of the chromophore therefore destroying the chromophore for good. Many conditions that in the past have been difficult to treat can now be more successfully treated with this method. Research has also shown that this type of selective photo-thermolysis can target the selected chromophore without damaging surrounding tissue. The broadband light also covers a larger area therefore enabling large areas to be treated with each discharge.
The Harmony system is the very latest in AFT technology which is able to target specific chromophores. The Harmony has 60 different FDA approved considerations.
